Ethiopian Adoption

>> Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Ethiopia was an interesting place. We saw lots of signs along the sides of the streets on the way to and from the orphanage. We hardly saw any Western signs. Of course Coke is there, it's everywhere! We asked our driver if there was a McDonalds or a Pizza Hut and he had never heard of these two restaurants. This is amazing!!!! If you have traveled around the world much, these two restaurants seem to be around! Anyway, all of the places in the world that we've been to have these two.

Some of the signs had both English and Amharic. We liked seeing the Amharic language. It seems so difficult to learn. There are probably more than 100 letters to learn as each consonant has about five different shapes according to the vowel that's with it. So, "ba" looks different that "be" and "bo" etc...

We enjoyed talking to our driver, Adonia, about the language. He laughed when we would say things wrong. They have some interesting sounding letters with no equivalent in English.

That is so cool! Did you learn how to say "no problem" in Amharic? It sounds kind of funny. We thought Arabic was hard...oh wait it is!! ; ) -Carie
