Ethiopian Food

Hi Everyone!
We're getting closer to April 8th. We're sorta nervous because we've seen other couples not make it through for one reason or another. We are hopeful, though, too. We're so ready to have this important step behind us. :)
In the mean time I thought I'd share a little bit more about our time in Ethiopia. Every day that we were at the Thomas Center we ate Ethiopian food for lunch with the staff. For two dinners we had Ethiopian food at restaurants. It was good to experience this food. It's a different taste than we're used to and much spicier than we're used to. We enjoyed it the first few times, but then it started to bother Tim's stomach and we were ready for the food we're used to. So, when we got home we went out for Italian food!! yum!!!
Before eating it is a custom to wash hands. The picture below is of our driver, Adonia, washing his hands. Someone would come around with this pitcher of water and a basin and we'd wash our hands with soap while she poured the water over our hands. It was very nice!

This is Injera, the famous Ethiopian bread! It's kind of spongy texture, with an interesting taste. We unrolled it onto our plate, just like Abdissa showed us, and then put meats and vegetables in sauces over it. The bread would soak up the sauce. It was pretty tasty!

Here's a picture of a bunch of meats and vegetables in sauces at one restaurant. It's the kind of thing that you put on top of the Injera bread!

Here's a picture of Jeni's plate. As you can see she is using what Abdissa called the "Ethiopian fork," her hands!! :) It's funny, when we would eat with our hands we would make a mess, but the Ethiopians seemed to stay clean. I don't know how they did it! :)

Here's a picture of the two of us eating at a restaurant! Adonia took us to this restaurant, which was very nice! Even though we were ready to eat the food we are used to, we did enjoy eating the Ethiopian food!!!

I love Ethiopian food. Still haven't figured out how to eat it and not get it everywhere. Plus how in the world do you get meat off the bone with one hand and no fork?!!??? Very interesting food and very spicy, Love it! Do you like the boiled egg that would be in some of the sauces? That's the best part!!- Carie
